August 16, 2001
This year's President's Star Charity (PSC)
is going to be tough competition, in every sense!

The Phuas did their part last year with their
first-ever musical and you loved them so much, donations came up
to a whopping $1.9m.
This year, the Challenge
of the Sexes will have normally-clad-in tube-topes MediaCorp
babes fighting it out against the usually-well-coiffured male MediaCorp
hunks.
Stars like Pierre Png, Fann Wong, Glenn Ong
and Jacelyn Tay will roll up sleeves and put on their sneakers in
games like basketball, soccer and even tug-of-war.
Of
course, it's going to be boring to have your regular version of
these sporting games. Organisers have planned for twists and surprises,
which we will not reveal for now, to spice up the courts.
And to raise the competitive standards, national
sports players like Jesmine Ho, Jing Jun Hong, Quah Kim Song and
Andrew Fang will be hotting up these novel games and showing off
their sporting skills as well.
Hosts for the evening, Andrea DeCruz, Edmund
Chen, Sharon Au and Gurmit Singh will also be on hand to get the
adrenalin and cheers going. And the star-studded event will see
more than 45 national players and MediaCorp celebrities taking sides
in the Red (female) and Blue (male) teams to compete against each
other to raise funds for a good cause.
Here's what some of the stars involved in the
challenges have to say in anticipation:
Huang Biren
Personal sports quotient
"I'm not too sporty though I used to swim when I was in
school. I haven't played football (the item I'm going to be in)
before… it's such a pity Man U and Liverpool are gone or they could
give us a hand!"
How will you survive?
"You don't normally get to see the celebrities doing sports
because it's not our specialty. But I think the audience would like
to see how we handle the events; perhaps they're even waiting to
see us embarrass ourselves!"
Gurmit Singh
Personal sports quotient
"I've not much time now but I play table tennis, football,
sepak takraw and I was in track-and-field. I've even tried netball
before!"
Charity starts with him
"I sometimes host shows and make appearances for charity,
especially if they're for kids. I've also been helping out with
Camp Sunshine for the past 7 years although they initially told
me," We don't have much money to pay you…" even though I was trying
to explain to them I was doing it without charge!"
